Where is Sillyon Ancient City?
Sillyon Ancient City is located 37 kilometers from Antalya city center and 15 kilometers from the Serik district. Located in the Yanköy neighborhood of Serik, this ancient city sits on the 235-meter-high Koçhisar Hill, in the region formerly known as Pamphylia, between Perge and Aspendos. It is said that the city was founded by Mopsos and Calchas, who migrated after the Trojan War. At one time, even Alexander the Great wanted to capture this city, but he could not overcome its strong defenses.
The first coin bearing the name of Sillyon was minted here in the 3rd century BCE. However, over the centuries, the city has suffered significant damage from earthquakes. Consequently, many structures, including the castle on the hill, have been damaged.
What can be found in the ancient city?
When you arrive at Sillyon Ancient City, you will find traces of major empires such as the Hellenistic, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman. Among the ruins, you’ll see remnants of a palace, gate, stadium, tower, walls, theater, odeon, monumental tomb, fountain, bath, necropolis, houses, roads, and cisterns. Additionally, there is a Byzantine church and an eight-century-old Seljuk mosque. At the entrance of the ancient city, there is also a drinkable spring called “Malaria Spring.”
How to Get to Sillyon Ancient City?
You can reach Sillyon comfortably, safely, and quickly by private vehicle or by renting a chauffeured car. However, there is no direct vehicle access to the ancient city. You need to drive to a certain point and park near Silyon Café. After that, you complete the remaining uphill path on foot, which takes about 10 minutes.
